The number of patent applications published by the European Patent Office (EPO) has just passed the 4 million mark.
This is an application filed by L’Oréal, which is among the top 10 French applicants (Patent Index 2021 barometer) concerning an image recognition system based on artificial intelligence capable of identifying different skin tones and helping customers to choose the cosmetics best suited to their complexion.
The EPO notes a marked trend of patent applications relating to Fourth Industrial Revolution (“4RI”) technologies, such as artificial intelligence, which are now affecting areas such as cosmetics.
